Volume I begins with institutional forms and structures and focuses on preservation and transmission of the knowledge and wisdom of the past, then calls for a global networking approach to the rethinking of all education. Volume II is on the future of research. Volume III focuses on the individual: learning and teaching. Intended primarily for the developing world, these volumes should be seen as an 'outline' to which web page addresses will be added.

Author's Note: The author alone is at this stage responsible for this experiment, for the incompleteness, errors and other faults in what is the 'green fruit' of a long exploration of a vast literature and of attending conferences and studying reports. Pulling together and linking ideas from many sources continues to be an exhausting task and at times a nearly impossible one. This compilation should be seen as a precursor of a more adequate online book on higher global education to come: which will also require the collaboration of many researchers and experimenters. I am grateful for those in many countries (many of them cited in the bibliographies) who have helped me gather this information because they feel the time has come for this kind of future survey and introduction. Between January 2002 and August 2006 this online book had been used more than 400,000 times and in over 30 countries.

This online book is intended to be continually updated--with more recent web links to illustrations and bibliography items--and reports on new developments, such as large-scale transdisciplinary research on basic human problems, perhaps as a cooperative project involving many contributors who are interested in enlarging a quest for larger research visions for higher education.  Sequel to THE EMERGING WORLDWIDE ELECTRONIC UNIVERSITY (Praeger 1993)
